What is acne

Acne vulgaris is a skin disorder caused by clogged skin pores due to the buildup of oils and dead skin cells.

Acne is common among teenagers and gradually fades after adolescence, males are affected more than females.

An acne pimple usually lasts for two weeks, but some types of pimples may remain for several months.

Acne-causing factors are associated with the accumulation of oils and dead skin cells in the pores of the skin, and germs that enter the pores cause redness, swelling and ulcers.

The increase in testosterone during puberty also increases the production of fat in the skin.

Causes of acne

The following are four main causes of acne:

  • Excess sebum production.
  • Hair follicles are clogged with oils and dead skin cells.
  • bacteria.
  • infections.

Acne usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders, because these areas contain most of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles connected to the sebaceous glands.

The follicle wall may swell and produce whiteheads or reach the surface of the skin causing blackheads.

Blackheads look like dirt stuck in the pores but in reality, the pores are clogged with bacteria and oils that turn brown when exposed to air.

Pimples are raised, red patches with a white center that appear when clogged hair follicles become inflamed or infected with bacteria.

The blockages and inflammation deep within the hair follicles produce cyst-like lumps below the surface of the skin. There are other pores in the skin which are openings for the sweat glands, but they usually have nothing to do with acne.

There are factors that make acne worse, including:

  • Hormonal changes: Androgens are hormones that increase in levels in boys and girls during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to swell and produce more fat.
  • The hormonal changes that occur in middle age, especially in women, can lead to pimples.
  • Certain medications: These include anything containing corticosteroids, testosterone, or lithium.
  • Diet: Studies show that eating certain foods, including foods rich in carbohydrates like bread, cake, and chips, may worsen acne.
  • Stress: Stress does not cause acne, but if you already have acne, stress can make it worse.

Acne Treatment Methods Acne treatment

should be fast and effective, as the treatment aims to improve the existing situation and reduce its recurrence, and avoid the bad effects and complications resulting from neglecting treatment and exacerbating the infection.

The patient must also be aware of the possibility of infection continuing for a limited period and the need to persevere in treatment and prevention so that the condition does not worsen and develop into cystic pimples, or to an advanced stage of acne that leads to leaving traces and chronic scars.

Acne treatment may include a number of procedures, including:

  • over-the-counter topical creams, salicylic acid, or benzoyl peroxide.
  • Oral or topical antibiotics in chronic acne cases.
  • Corticosteroid injections in case of dermatophytosis.
  • Oral contraceptives in women to inhibit the activity of the sebaceous glands of the skin.

The method of treating acne and its effects differ from one person to another, depending on the patient's health condition and the degree of skin irritation and associated infections.

The specialist also determines the appropriate method of treatment according to the data related to the appearance of acne, and in general divides the treatment of acne into the following treatment groups:

  • Antimicrobial drugs associated with inflammation, which may be bacterial or fungal, and can be by oral tablets or topical ointments.
  • Cosmetic acne treatments such as ointments that moisturize the skin and improve its nutrition and freshness.
  • Some types of vitamins that help in the growth of the skin and compensate for damaged ones, such as retinoid derivatives.
  • Sometimes hormonal treatments may be effective.
  • The use of plastic surgery and laser technology to treat acne and its effects.
  • It should be noted that treatment may reduce the effects of acne and may not be able to remove it completely.

Tips for dealing with acne

Acne is a chronic skin disease that affects about 90% of young people under the age of twenty.

Therefore, the acne sufferer is advised to follow the instructions to preserve the skin and prevent the exacerbation of acne during the treatment period, the most important of which are:

  • periodic cleaning of the skin and washing it twice a day with water of medium heat and using a special soap for that.
  • Avoid products that may cause the pores of the skin to close, while choosing cosmetics that are suitable for sensitive skin and are free of oils.
  • When shaving the face, it is preferable to use an electric razor or a safety razor, and lubricate the face with water and foam before applying the shaving cream.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Brush your hair frequently while avoiding oily hair products.
  • Avoid peeling and picking at the blisters. Trying to pop the blisters can leave scars or inflammation in the pimples and slow the healing process.
  • Avoid using toothpaste on the pimple as it may cause dryness, sensitivity, or increase the pimple.
  • Do exercises that relieve stress that exacerbates acne.
  • Protect the skin from the sun's rays by applying the appropriate sunscreen, as some acne treatment medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun.
